[OSGeo Africa] Dryland wheat

Hi All

I have consulted my friendly botanist Dr Phil, and these ovals are indicative of dryland wheat farming in the Sandveld (i.e. wheat farming at the extreme limit of production). The aim is to minimise wind-blown sand, by retaining areas of natural veg between strips of wheat.

So, they are due to aliens … edible ones.

Regards

Kate

I think it is a (experimental?) method of farming that is meant to reduce wind erosion. Or aid in land rehabilitation (perhaps planted with legumes?) Not sure of the type of crop here though - wheat maybe?

There are similar styles near Langebaan in the Western Cape. You can see them from the road (and on imagery) - the West Coast ovals are definitely planted, so not a race track in that case.

Nicely SPOTted :-)

Cool pic , probably not crop circles though? Maybe they're clearing the land for farming purposes but working from the outer ringss inwards? Also some car race tracks or offroad 4wheeler tracks could fit the bill.

Thanks for the share , sorry If I wasn't much help Kaylin. 😅

Good day,

I am looking at the SPOT 6 2015 imagery in the South West of the Northern Cape (round about the region of 17.521E -30.558S).

I came across these strange oval type shape and I am intrigued as to what they are.

See below the images I snipped for your viewing. Both taken from a similar area.

Kind Regards
