For any historic imagery of South Africa dating back to 1926, please contact sales at drdlr.gov.za<mailto:sales at drdlr.gov.za> or visit our portal http://cdngiportal.co.za/cdngiportal/. Once you land on the portal, click on the “NGI Aerial Photography” tab and search. It is a bit complex to navigate. Please note that all imagery flown after 2008 is digitally acquired, before that it was all analogue. If you struggle with the portal, contact sales with your request (its free ☺

The high resolution imagery is not available through the portal but a lower res preview (which is adequate in many instances).

Who can I contact at NGI to find out what historic  images (i.e. 2005-2015) is available for a certain area? Can one send them a shapefile to query the availability of images for that area?  The area is quite small: 0,5 x 1 km.
