Hi all

I had a good look at the GeoNetwork CD, in my mind it includes everything we may want in the CD. But before I contiue - can I ask that we do a quick reality check here:
1. We have access to the GN_OS202 (the GeoNetwork CD)
2. AgileWorks has produced an Open Source GIS CD (Agile works is a private company in RSA offering Open Source Services)
3. Paul Scott has also produced such a CD (Paul is associated with the University of Stellenbosch)
4. The CSIR may include GIS stuff on the Ubuntu Distro...
5. Any others?

Do we really need a long list of different CD's, or should we rather collaborate and produce a family of related CD's?

I actually think that we have a need for different CD's.

We need a generic CD that includes a range of good software. It needs to be usable on a variety of OS platforms. Perhaps the GeoNetwork CD is the answer on this one? I understand that organisations such as Agile works may want to have a different one for marketing purposes, but it would be nice to pool resources in this type of development as well! By the way the AgileWorks CD has a much nicer look and feel! :-)

We also need nationally/regionally relevant CDs. From a South African perspective we really need this, but I am sure that other countries will also benefit from something like this and an African version would be great. This one should be a live, bootable CD and should include the following:

An OS

Various GIS tools

A metadata tool (GeoNetwork) with South African metadata records and live browser based maps.

Having given my opinion, here are a few more questions:

Do we need different CD's in order to promote Open Source Software, if so what do we need?

What should be on such CD's?

What about the branding on the label?

Gaby
