The two day course provides an introduction to international
standards for geographic information, including topics such
as, 'What is a standard?', standardization organizations, the
standard development process, importance of geographic
information standards and a number of case studies, including
ISO 19115, Geographic information - Metadata, the South
African address standard (SANS 1883) and the OpenGIS web map
service standard. These topics are presented against the
background of standardization in South Africa's spatial data
infrastructure (SDI). Three CPD points can be obtained for
successful completion of the course. The course is presented
by Dr Serena Coetzee and Mr Antony Cooper, both actively
involved in national and international standardization
efforts. Dr Coetzee leads the project for a South African
address standard, the international project on address
standardization (ISO 19160, Addressing) and chairs the
Programme Maintenance Group (PMG) of ISO/TC 211, Geographic
information/Geomatics. Mr Cooper is the convenor for Wor<var></var>king
Group 7 in ISO/TC 211 and chair of SABS SC71, Geographic
information committee, the local mirror commitee of ISO/TC
211.</div>
