Thanks for the feedback and yes, we understand that it will take a while before Australia can host the international event again. I just wanted to say that Melbourne is here to help once you have agreed on the next steps for the National and Regional editions of FOSS4G.
I also wanted to clarify that MCB is not a convention center - we are a not-for-profit organization that represents Melbourne as a destination. We have close to 200 hotel, venue and other industry partners and can help you with any size of the event.

I don't believe Australia is ready to hold an international FOSS4G for at least 2 years, and probably more. I believe we should not be considered for an international FOSS4G until we have successfully run a national (Aust/NZ) and then a regional (Asia/Pacific) FOSS4G, probably starting with 50 to 100 delegates.
And for the first few years we should be looking to run an event at as low a cost as possible - ideally getting a venue for free, or close to free. (I expect that will be a tough ask for you).
I believe I say this with authority as I chaired the international FOSS4G in 2009, and up to a couple of weeks ago had been on the international FOSS4G committee since 2009.
So good to hear you interest, but I think you are significantly premature in reaching out.
