All,
Is this something that we should put an OSGeo-AustNZ submission in for?

We did something similar for the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into Public Sector Information to good effect.

Please note that New Zealand Geospatial Office<http://www.geospatial.govt.nz/> is planning to release a Request for Information on/around 14 March 2011. Once released the Request for Information will be posted on
http://www.gets.govt.nz/default.aspx?show=HomePage

I have cribbed the following outline from the RFI as currently DRAFTED.

Title: "Request for Information (RFI) for the provision of guidance regarding Geographic Information System product participation in New Zealand Spatial Data Infrastructure".

Context of the RFI

NZGO is working to produce a New Zealand SDI cookbook which will help organizations understand how to participate in SDI: as contributors providing geospatial information; as contributors building geospatial catalogues and as users benefiting from SDI. This cookbook will be constructed in a wiki-type environment in order that the information can be maintained efficiently.

The cookbook will provide guidance to government and private-sector organizations alike and as such will be an important resource. There are three key sections of the SDI cookbook:

* Characteristics of a Provider Node - how to participate in SDI as a provider of geospatial information

* Characteristics of a Catalogue Node - how to build a catalogue node

* How can my organization Use SDI - a guide to benefiting from SDI

These are generic documents that are intended to be appended to future RFPs to document the vendor-neutral characteristics of systems that will 'play well' in New Zealand's SDI.

However, it is recognized that many users are already using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other spatial products from a range of vendors and open source organizations. These users will require product-specific guidance in order to participate in and benefit from SDI. It is this guidance that is sought by this RFI.

Purpose of the RFI

The purpose of the RFI is to seek product-specific guidance from the suppliers of GIS and other spatial products to enable their users across New Zealand to effectively participate in SDI. Although this RFI seeks input in a Word document form, the intention is that submitting vendors will subsequently be able to maintain that information in a wiki-type environment. That subsequent maintenance is not a consideration in this RFI.

The guidance being sought is not intended to provide a detailed technical implementation guide. Rather, it is intended to provide existing users of a vendor's product with a high-level guide to participating in SDI.

Since standards play such a critical role in establishing an SDI, it is anticipated that a key part of the vendor's response will focus on how to implement SDI standards in their product or products.

Any questions or suggestions - please let me know.

Thanks and regards,
