We are encouraged by the number of respondents, over 300 organisations from around the world. We are also pleased with the split of OGC members and non-members. </SPAN></FONT></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><SPAN class=ecxapple-style-span><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt">The geographic distribution of responses, heavily weighted from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America, is also representative of the OGC member activities in these regions. It's promising to see notable contributions from Africa and South America, and in future years we hope to see more activity in these regions, as well as the Middle East.</SPAN></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><SPAN class=ecxapple-style-span><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt">The preamble and background (up to slide 14) is from the researchers, Professor Mu Xia and Professor Kexin Zhao, who carried out this work on behalf of the OGC. Once again we thank them for their efforts.</SPAN></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><SPAN class=ecxapple-style-span><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt">Slide 21 <B><SPAN style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">High growth potential for OGC standards</SPAN></B><B><SPAN style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold"> </SPAN></B>highlights the work that needs to be done to communicate and educate the broader market place regarding OGC standards. We see this as a core activity of the Business Value Sub-committee to explain to stakeholders how open standards can support organisational goals.</SPAN></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><SPAN class=ecxapple-style-span><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt">This means being able to explain the value of using open standards and participating in open standards development processes to: software developers, programmers, system architects, GIS analysts, GIS managers, IT Directors, CIOs and CEOs. </SPAN></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt" lang=EN-US>It's also worth noting the <B><SPAN style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">top four standards adopted</SPAN></B> by both technology users and providers that responded to the survey: </SPAN></FONT><SPAN class=ecxapple-style-span><FONT face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Web Map Service (WMS), Web Feature Service (WFS), </SPAN></FONT></SPAN><FONT face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial" lang=EN-US>KML and GML.</SPAN></FONT><SPAN class=ecxapple-style-span><FONT face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial"> </SPAN></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt" lang=EN-US>This result will help shape and guide work being done by OGC staff on standards tutorials, as well as using existing material from OGC members for standards training.</SPAN></FONT></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><SPAN class=ecxapple-style-span><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt">Slides 23 and 24 on <B><SPAN style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">Adoption Level - Diversity </SPAN></B>provides some of the real insight into the survey results. The success of any open standard is in its adoption and the breakdown of standards by technology users and providers in these slides show the low levels of adoption or awareness for several standards. </SPAN></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt" lang=EN-US>Information can be drawn from the <B><SPAN style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">Benefits and Costs</SPAN></B> sections on slides 28 and 29 to assist with the messaging requirements highlighted earlier for the various stakeholders. </SPAN></FONT><SPAN class=ecxapple-style-span><FONT face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Benefits include improved productivity, customer service and partner coordination for technology users, through to competitive advantage, market expansion and customer satisfaction for technology providers. There are four main costs noted, which include training, organisational change, integration and implementation of the standards. </SPAN></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt" lang=EN-US>One of the key findings from all respondents is that they all promote open standards, whether they are participating in standards development or not. </SPAN></FONT></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal><FONT size=3 face=Arial><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 12pt" lang=EN-US>Finally, in terms of certification there's an overlap between the top four standards being adopted and certification needs, with the additional inclusion of several OGC web service standards in the top listing.</SPAN></FONT></P>
