Después de un par de meses en pruebas, acaba de estrenarse ikiMap (<a href="http://www.ikimap.com">http://www.ikimap.<wbr>com</a>), una red social para compartir cartografía alrededor de una comunidad de usuarios. Se trata de un proyecto desarrollado por la
compañía Sixtema.<br>

En Internet existen infinidad de páginas y recursos para consultar mapas. ¿Qué tiene de novedoso ikiMaps? Pues que son los propios usuarios los que crean y suben nuevos mapas con la información disponible, además de comentar y valorar los mapas de los otros
usuarios.<br>

Sería por tanto un equivalente cartográfico a YouTube en los vídeos o Flickr para las fotografías. Para ello se ha tratado de crear una aplicación sencilla de manejar, desarrollada sobre software libre, que cuenta con el uso de las siguientes tecnologías:<br>

•Servidor de mapas: Mapserver.<br>
•Lenguaje de programación: PHP y JS.<br>
•Geodatabase: PostGIS.<br>
•Interfaz: Openlayers.<br>

Los usuarios, una vez se han registrado gratuitamente, pueden comenzar a compartir cartografía subiendo sus propias capas, o creando mapas a partir de las capas ya existentes.

Una vez en ikiMap, un usuario puede generar un mapa al que le irá agregando las distintas capas que quiera. Hay todo tipo de ejemplos de mapas personalizados: desde los viajes de Astérix hasta la distribución mundial del leopardo, pasando por un viaje histórico
hasta la última era glacial.<br>

En general, se ha conseguido el objetivo de crear una herramienta sencilla y manejable. Existen diferentes mecanismos para localizar mapas: por categorías, palabras clave, cadenas de texto, ámbito geográfico, pertenecientes a un determinado usuario, etc. Y
el blog oficial da más pistas para extraer el máximo partido a la herramienta. <br>
