Klippel and Krzysztof Janowicz of <b>Penn State’s GeoVISTA Center
</b>as they discuss cutting-edge research across the breadth of GIScience.
The research projects presented in this webinar have real-world
ramifications for GIS practitioners whose work involves synthesizing large
quantities of data and presenting information in a useful form.</p>
<p style="font-family: lucida grande,verdana,helvetica,arial,sans-serif; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px;">Alan MacEachren will provide an
outline of recent and current research at GeoVISTA, covering a broad domain
of spatial cognition. He will highlight specific geovisualization and
visual analytics projects with applications in public health and crisis
management. </p>
<p style="font-family: lucida grande,verdana,helvetica,arial,sans-serif; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px;">Alex Klippel will address the central
role that human factors play in the development of spatial information
theories and geospatial technologies. Increased multidisciplinary knowledge
about human factors allows for improving the design of geospatial tools. In
return, both the theoretical and technical contributions that GIScience
offers open access to resources of the information society and allow
spatial information to be rendered precisely. </p>
<p style="font-family: lucida grande,verdana,helvetica,arial,sans-serif; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px;">Krzysztof Janowicz will highlight
ongoing research on sensor networks, mobile computing and the Semantic
Geospatial Web. Information from government agencies from different
countries, data collected by companies and volunteers, and especially the
increasing amount of information from mobile devices such as smartphones
needs to be integrated on-the-fly to answer complex scientific, economic
and social questions, and the combination of this heterogeneous information
requires its semantic integration. </p>
