[Board] F2F Agenda - OSGeo Core Values

Hi Sanghee, board,

Time is running out to prepare for your board meeting, especially with
Christmas holidays coming up too. This limits what you as a board can
achieve in preparation, and limits the time for community response and
debate.

So I suggest be pragmatic, and keep goals simple and achievable.
Be careful asking the community for open ended questions which will take
much time to think about and then articulate. You likely won't get a
response.

Better to be targeted with questions. "I think we should do X. Do you
think it is a good or bad idea? Should we approach using "Big X", or
"Little x", or maybe something else? This is harder to prepare, but has
much greater chance of success in getting community engagement.
(I learned this through our initial mistakes in building OSGeo-Live:
http://cameronshorter.blogspot.com.au/2011/06/memoirs-of-cat-herder-coordinating.html
)

So hear is my suggestion:
1. Write draft text for proposal(s)
2. Invite community comment and feedback (using OSGeo Discuss list)
3. Discuss in board meeting
4. Refine text
5. Ask for further comment from community
6. Finalise text
7. Board vote to adopt text

I suggest as board members heading into board meeting, each of you
should consider taking on at least one point that you think is
important, and draft text for new content. (If you are a last minute
person, maybe use your plane flight to the meeting as time to compose
such text). This will be a case of leading by example, which I believe
will result in community members following your lead and taking on
similar initiates.

Warm regards,

Cameron

Instead our course to F2F meeting could be the remedy, if we prepare the F2F meeting with many people’s involvement, interest and participation. So finally I just hope F2F meeting be the turing point of OSGeo to get stronger and stronger.

To reduce board member’s burden and to increase participation from the community, we need to ask community members to actively participate in setting the agendas, expected outcomes of F2F meeting earlier rather than asking after F2F meeting. We may ask them to write down their own OSGeo’s mission statement/core values/visions there at wiki page. And then board members could review and discuss their ideas with board members. By doing this, we could engage/attract more diverse people and thoughts.

As you know, the core values are the guiding principles that dictate behavior and action. We always talk about ‘transparency’, ‘open’, ‘collaboration’. Those words can be OSGeo’s core values and if we incorporate core values in OSGeo officially, core values may help us govern relationship with other organisation and clarify who we are.
