We have seen a number of discussions come in around sponsorship of
events, such as this.<br>
The last official OSGeo Board position on sponsorship of events was
written up at:<br>
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Board_of_Directors#Conferences_and_related_events">http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Board_of_Directors#Conferences_and_related_events</a><br>
<br>
<i>"... Other spatial conferences regularly request an OSGeo
involvement, such as providing presenters, workshops, OSGeo-Live
DVDs for distribution, or providing a booth. OSGeo facilitates
such requests to the level we can achieve with interested
volunteers, but typically expects the conference or sponsors to
cover expenses.</i><i><br>
</i><i>OSGeo has limited budget set aside for code sprints, which
are seen as a valuable forum for giving directly back to
development teams. OSGeo will typically expect co-contributions
from interested sponsors, and would prefer to support code sprints
which are of benefit to multiple projects and communities.</i>"<br>
<br>
I'm open to updating this position, but suggest we should do it
holistically, rather than being reactive as each new opportunity
arises.<br>
In particular, we should look at our current and expected budget,
identify what percentage can be allocated toward supporting
conferences, and provide guidelines for selection criteria.<br>
Does the above Board Priorities address our current feelings? If
not, how should it change?<br>
Once we have answered these questions, we will be in a better
position to answer specifics about conferences such as ICC 2015.<br>

<pre wrap="">I agree with Gerald that having a booth at this ICC event and a visible
presence is very important. As Suchith mentioned, we do have a strong
representation in Brazil of ICA-OSGeo labs, so I would hope we can
leverage those local leaders to help make the booth happen. I will
contact Georg Gartner and get his thoughts on this (OSGeo booth, OSGeo
presence, OSGeo as a 'partner' on the conference site).
As an aside, taking a look at the opening page of the ICC event site
(<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.icc2015.org/">http://www.icc2015.org/</a>), it sure is made very very clear that this event
is the flagship event for the International Cartographic Association -
it's mentioned in the second line of text; the welcoming letter from Georg
really sets the tone for the event being their ICA event. Take a second
to review our FOSS4G Portland opening page and look for any OSGeo
reference (<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://2014.foss4g.org/">https://2014.foss4g.org/</a>) - you'll have to pan all the way down
the page to the very bottom and notice a very bland small font text
"FOSS4G 2014 is a production of the OSGeo organization." - doesn't exactly
make one think it is *the* OSGeo event. We have lots to learn from the
ICA community indeed.

<pre wrap="">I am hoping to attend ICC 2015 (though i cannot confirm fully now). If so,
it will be a pleasure to setup OSGeo booth and promote OSGeo with other
colleagues.
I am sure there will be many volunteers (especialy local volunteers) to
help with OSGeo booth and promotion as we have a very strong community in
Brazil and ICC 2015 will be a great opportunity to promote OSGeo's
Education initiative and activities.
I suggest that Jeff emails Georg informing OSGeo's interest to have a
booth at ICC 2015 and requesting free (or a substantial discount) from the
local organisors of ICC 2015.

<pre wrap="">Hello,
I knew about the ICA-OSGeo MOU but I did not know that Suchith will
attend this conference. You also said that you will have help there.
So with this new knowledge, I think we can now say that OSGeo will be
present there, so what about the booth then ?
When I mentioned the MOU it was more to have new ones that speaking
about the well known existing one. Sorry if I was not clear.
Note that I was guessing, maybe wrongly, that we may ask for a free
booth there.
Or at least a special discount for a foundation such as OSGeo.
Hope to hear back from you,
Best regards,

<pre wrap="">
Having a MOU and the Geo For All network in common with ICA, I guess that
asking for a free booth (or a substantial discount) makes a lot of sense.
Indeed it's good for both parts, that OSGeo has a good presence there,
promoting projects and community building.
It should be great to reach there other OSGeo'ers, a booth for a three
days conference is quite a lot of work for just two (probably hyper
busy) attendants.
Cheers
