<p>Sarah, thank you for sharing. I find it very sad when people
leave a community because of fractures within that community. I'm
sorry to see you leave. At some point I want to collate my
thoughts related to community and diversity in an essay. I'm
struggling to prioritise enough time to do the topic justice.</p>
<p>Maxi, while Sarah has very kindly let us know that she is leaving
our community, and explained why, I strongly suspect many more
people have silently left. I feel the number of people emailing
our discuss email list has dropped, and I suspect that
confrontational emails have contributed to that. (I've
deliberately limited the CC list to the osgeo board, in line with
Sarah's original email). Writing or improving a Code of Conduct is
a significant undertaking and can be emotionally draining, as
there are often very strong opinions needing to be considered, and
there is a track record of people involved being personally
attacked. I'd suggest such an undertaking is beyond the scope of
being a volunteer board member, although board members would be
welcomed within a Code of Conduct committee. You might also want
to volunteer your time to contribute toward a Code of Conduct
committee?</p>
<p>Maria, I applaud your commitment toward wanting to improve our
Code of Conduct. I was on the FOSS4G-Oceania committee and am
happy to facilitate insight into our initiatives into diversity if
interested. Re your statement "things are being done to PREVENT
..." While I'd love to "prevent" Code-Of-Conduct violations, I
think the best we can do is "reduce" and "mitigate the impacts".
Us humans are beautifully complicated and flawed and we don't
always get things right.</p>
<p>Steven Feldman summarised this well in a FOSS4G presentation on
Diversity:<br>
