There are a couple of things I wanted to mention as we get ready to start 2011. The first has to do with filling the Chapter’s Board Representative Position for 2011. When we became an “official” OSGeo chapter last year one our responsibilities was to appoint a Board Representative. I volunteered to fill the position until the end of this year. I’ll be the first to admit I haven’t accomplished much with this new responsibility, and I really think the Chapter would benefit from having a new (and more active) board rep in 2011. I think we should start talking about who might fill this role in 2011 and prepare for a vote to elect a new board rep.

While we are at it, it might not be a bad idea to elect/appoint two (2) other chapter officers. I noted that we neglected to post meeting minutes from our 2010 annual meeting. I think having a Chapter Secretary to take care of these issues, and to handle correspondence for the chapter, would be a good idea. We might also elect/appoint an event planner that can coordinate are annual meeting and our annual conference (hack-a-thon) if we try to make it regular. Perhaps having one of our Southern California brethren fill this role would be a good way to increase collaboration by members throughout the state. If someone else steps up to fill the Board Rep position, and we lack volunteers, I’d be willing to help out in one of these supporting roles for 2011.

These are only suggestions. :] I am at times accused of trying to be overly formal, and perhaps I am making that same mistake again.

The second thing I wanted to mention was our annual meeting for 2011. That is another thing we are required to do as an “official” chapter. We’ve made some tentative plans for a hack-a-thon on March

19, 2011, but haven’t nailed down a location just yet. We could try to have are annual meeting then. Or, we could do a separate annual meeting in early spring. (In 2009 we had the meeting in February.) We’ve had the meeting up at UC Davis and over in San Francisco. I think either of those locations would work again this year if they were available.

Please share you comments with me so we can make some plans for next year.

Thanks!

Landon

P.S. – Congratulations to Alex Mandel on his appointment as a Charter Member of the OSGeo!

Warning:
Information provided via electronic media is not guaranteed against defects including translation and transmission errors. If the reader is not the intended recipient, you are hereby notified that any dissemination, distribution or copying of this communication is strictly prohibited.
