I have also considered this "inversion" of the terms as a means of
neatly removing the issue of the OSGeo name being "managed" or
"leased" by a third party, and of OSGeo having to take on "faith" that
the third party will "do a good job".

It runs afoul of people's sensibilities in other ways, of course,
since it enters OSGeo much more directly into the business of
providing training.  At least, to the extent that an annual or
semi-annual "event" like the Teach-in can be understood to enter the
overall training market.

However, I would be interested in hearing to what extent people
consider this approach an improvement.
