Folks,

This is a fascinating idea because of the potential to allow business models to be built around hosting events under the OSGeo brand.

I'm for anything that increases someone's ability to generate revenue through open source software. However I suspect the concerns would be centered on 1) quality assurance - does "OSGeo" become diluted or meaningless if any guy with a computer and a projector can set up show as an "OSGeo training provider"? and 2) liability - doing anything "in the name of" OSGeo but with out direct OSGeo supervision may have some liability issues for OSGeo. Maybe I run an OSGeo training and end up burning down the meeting venue. Someone is going to try to sue OSGeo...

So there's some input from a conference committee lurker. If those issues can be worked out, then consider this a +1 lurker vote.

Dan

On Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 12:44 PM, Frank Warmerdam <warmerdam@pobox.com> wrote:
+1 for Dave Patton's request for a definition of "3rd party OSGeo branded event"
Dave / Daniel,
I believe the question is, are we open to the idea of events
(conferences, training) operated by a 3rd party (not under direct OSGeo
supervision), potentially operated for a profit by the third party but
presented using the OSGeo name, logo, etc.

If we are not open to this, then there is no need to go into detailed
policy proposals.

I'm +1 on allowing for third party OSGeo branded events, with detailed
policy yet to be defined.
