Indeed, as Cameron suggests, having some continuity each year would be good. Other organizations (AWRA comes to mind) take an approach where the main AWRA office manages the logistics of the conference, including web site, registration, etc, and the local organizing committee works with them to specify the venue and general plan. Then AWRA takes over and makes the contract with the venue and sets up the excursions, AV equipment etc. This way you don't have to find a completely new local committee each year with all the expertise of managing the financials AND the technical matters of a conference. Excess funds + risk stay with the main office each year.

Anyway, that's one model that I see a lot that seems to work that seems to be conducive to outside help coming into a new locale and helping run a conference there. There are probably other models that could be just as effective.
While I agree with Paul that it is very important to have a dynamic local team, it would also be very valuable to tap into an international team to coordinate some of the difficult parts of conferences. It would be especially valuable to see more retention of people being part of the same FOSS4G team from year to year, to help with things like paper selection, workshop setups, and the numerous other tasks.

That would probably be a bad idea. At least 50% of sponsorships have
historically been coming from local groups, sometimes more. Something
remote international organizers would have no way of tapping. Also
local guests make up over 50% of attendance, again, hard to promote if
you're from away (and worse, don't have the local lingo).
From my perspective, it's not a bad idea Dan. My fear was that the Euro/NorthAm groups weren't planning to bid this year, so aren't going to submit a proposal either since it's too soon a deadline for them... but we'll see.

I was encouraging a few others to bid this week and a group in Brazil and India seriously discussed it but decided 2012 was too soon for them. I expect you'll see a bid from Vietnam come in though. If that doesn't work out I think a more proactive approach, like you mention, will be our best bet. I'm always interested in brainstorming more like this if anyone wants to get on a skype call sometime.
Best wishes,
Hey folks. Something to consider... many of us regularly host conferences away from our home base (I just finished MapWindow 2011 in San Diego, though I'm in Idaho). Maybe someone (or a small consortium?) ambitious enough from N. America or Europe would would be interested in setting up a bid for operating FOSS4G in southeast Asia or South America? Just thinking outside the box a bit here... How about Chile or Brazil? I have colleagues at universities in both places and would entertain teaming suggestions for hosting FOSS4G in one of these locales.
Hello everyone,

As everyone I am sure noticed, the OSGeo Conference Committee did not receive any letters of intent to host the 2012 event, by yesterday's deadline. We will now of course extend the deadline, and encourage bidding from all regions of the globe (before the initial deadline, we were hoping for bids from places other than North America or Europe...however now we will open the bidding up to those areas as well). I hope this extension will let those potential teams that were already considering, to offer their interest in hosting this wonderful event in their location.
