We have made the preview edition of redesigned logo with red ribbon.
Besides, we also designed the fist edition of poster and conference

Should we discuss the 2012 conference at the new maillist and report
the latest improvement of foss4g 2012 here?

Thanks for opening the Wiki and mailinglist of FOSS4G 2012. I have informed
my colleagues here to take full use of these infrastructures. We currently
have five LOC members, and more members are expected in future. I have
learned how to use Wiki after a half-hour testing wiki-edit. It is a good
tool for publishing.

Dear Song,
thank you for the quick feedback.
We have now started a mailing list [1] specifically for the organization
of FOSS4G. This will help to keep everyone up to date and make it easier
to refer to decisions when new people join in. Could you please all make
sure that the members of the Local Organizing Committee join this list?
Additionally it would be helpful to see a list of the people who are
involved with organizing FOSS4G, from the top level down to the ground
work folks. This will make it much easier to interact for all of us.
Ideally your team can create an OSGeo user account and add themselves to
the FOSS4G 2012 Wiki [2] page to get this list started. We will use the
Wiki a lot for organization and referencing things so everybody should
have an account.
Please do not hesitate to use this mail list and the Wiki for anything
related to FOSS4G in Beijing - including issues that you may have with
the way we usually organize this conference and which might conflict
with your style of doing things.
If you are not familiar with MediaWiki we can arrange for a short
Webinar to introduce to the basic editing functions. This should take no
more than an hour of online conference.
Best regards,
Arnulf

<pre wrap="">Thank Arnulf, Cameron and Peter for your valuable comments. I agree
with you three about how to improve it, that is, vector format and easy
to edit, w/ FOSS4G ribbon, more compact, and text separated on the top
of web page. Based on current design, we will provide a few options. The
web site is soon coming, and we also wait for your suggestion,
particularly comments from past conference hosts.

P.S.
Arnulf, sorry for the lack of our feedbacks. We wil contact you about
any progress here in next days.

I agree with Cameron's suggestions overall - as he did, I like the
general look but would like to see it more compact.
One specific suggestion I would make is to not spell out "Free and
Open Source Software for Geospatial" as part of the logo, and also
don't make the dates part of the basic logo - you can add both of
these items separately as needed (for example see the 2011 web site
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://2011.foss4g.org/">http://2011.foss4g.org/</a> - we have the basic logo top left and the
other info top right). Just having to include FOSS4G, 2012, Beijing
in some combination makes it easier to work the text into the logo
and keep it compact.
I did see the FOSS4G ribbon in there and think that is fine how it
is, though maybe is could be a little more prominent with a
different color.
Cheers,
Peter.

Sorry, about lack of feedback, here are some comments from a
previous foss4g chair (I chaired foss4g 2009):
* I do like the general flow of colour and shape which to me
looks Chinese. This brings in a local flavour which is good.
* I can't see the original red ribbon which has been a theme
with all previous logos. I think it would be nice to keep the
ribbon for links back to foss4g, but I don't see it as being
essential.
* There is a lot of white space above and below the "FOSS4G
2012. Beijing". This is not good, as it will make the logo
difficult to include in other promotional places, such as on
prominent people's blogs, or on supporting organisation's
websites. Can you please rearrange in order to make the logo
more compact.

Hi Gao,
sorry for the long delay, I just found this mail.
Thanks you for sending in a first draft of the logo. It
seems like the
conference committee did not react at all, right? I am sorry
about this,
especially because we have been pushing you to get things done.
I added the logo to the Wiki page [1].
I also have some comments / questions:
* Would it be possible to increase the size of the font, so
that it is
also easily readable in a smaller version? Find an example
on the talk
page [2].
* We should also provide several different options, get some
inspiration
from past FOSS4G conferences [3].
* Ideally you could provide the logo in the editable vector
format SVG,
then rescaling, modifying, adding text and creating high quality
printouts is much easier. Alternatively EPS could also work.
We should start using the OSGeo SVN to manage the material
for FOSS34G
2012. Are you familiar with OSGeo's infrastructure?
Best regards,
Arnulf

Hello to Gao Ang and the Beijing team.
I just wanted to follow up on Arnulf's note and
encourage you to get a
simple web page up with basic information (at least
dates) as soon as
possible. I have been asked about dates also, people
are interested in
planning already!
If there is anything I can do to help point you in
the right direction
please let me know. I think it's important to get a
logo shortly - we used
the site crowdspring.com <a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="http://crowdspring.com"><http://crowdspring.com></a>
and were pleased with the results (but obviously
whatever approach you prefer is fine). As a high
level reference, the
timeline we worked to is at
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://2011.foss4g.org/__content/timeline">http://2011.foss4g.org/__content/timeline</a>
<a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="http://2011.foss4g.org/content/timeline"><http://2011.foss4g.org/content/timeline></a> (and
this hasn't changed much from year to year).

Hi,
I am receiving the first requests for exact
dates of FOSS4G Beijing.
This information is not yet publicly available.
From the conversations
on this list I got this:
OSGeo China: The proposed schedule is "18 Sept
2012 Tuesday" to "23
Sept 2012 Sunday" for the conference.
Q: The first day was dubbed "registration day",
does that mean the
regular conference would run from Wednesday to
Sunday?
We really need a FOSS4G 2012 splash screen up
asap. Simple is beautiful.
Just a few lines of HTML hacked in VI with a
nice little logo and the
exact dates are all we need for a start. This
can be completely
independet of the conference system we use later.
For the time being I set up the FOSS4G 2012
OSGeo Wiki page by simply
copying and adjusting the page of 2011 to have
something to point to [1]
and also asked SAC to set up a conference list [2].
Thanks,
Arnulf
