Subject: FOSS4G in Washington DC
Dear Mr. Ramsey:
On behalf of American Red Cross, we would like to extend our support for Washington DC as the host venue for the 2014 FOSS4G Conference.
The American Red Cross has slowly but surely embraced FOSS4G technology to support its international humanitarian work over the past 3 years. From community risk mapping to enterprise geodatabases, we’ve put FOSS4G at the heart of our international work. More than that, we view our work embracing FOSS4G as a case study for other humanitarian NGOs to follow and strongly advocate the use of FOSS4G tech to peers in DC and around the world.
Washington DC is a great place to host FOSS4G because:
FOSS4G is a great place for the humanitarian and government sectors to learn about free and open source software
It is a great place to identify projects and methods that would otherwise not compete against larger commercial and proprietary software vendors
Its is a great place to meet like minded open source geo peers and build relationships within the community
Washington DC is at the center of enterprise open source geo community with companies such as MapBox and OpenGeo working hard to promote Open Source Solutions.
The American Red Cross is very pleased at the prospect of supporting a FOSS4G Conference in Washington, DC. It is a vibrant and dynamic city with a global reputation and entrepreneurial spirit that is well aligned with the open source geospatial community:
Washington D.C. is very central to the rest of East Coast and is easily connected to europe and asian cities with three major airports within 1 hour.
Washington D.C. is very experienced at hosting large events and will have no problem accommodating all of the conference goers.
Due to recent Federal sequestration agency personnel cannot travel extensively. A local conference would attract these large institutional organizations that most need to embrace the open source community.
Washington D.C. is one of the great cultural destinations in the world with tons to see and experience from the many free museums to the wonderful architecture and grandeur of the national mall.
We hope the Conference Committee agrees that Washington, DC is the ideal location for the 2014 FOSS4G Conference. We are one of many organizations looking forward with great anticipation to your decision. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to be in touch.
Sincerely,
Dale Kunce - Senior Geospatial Engineer
Robert Banick - Field GIS Coordinator
