<div dir="ltr"><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:tahoma,sans-serif">While not formally a part of Conference Dev, the BLOC team has read this thread with great interest and I thought it might be useful to hear a perspective from our team as we continue to go through the "onboarding process" for full partnership in producing the Global 2017 FOSS4G Conference.</div><div class="gmail_default" style=""><ol style=""><li style=""><font face="tahoma, sans-serif">First and foremost, we have been overwhelmed by the assistance that has been offered to our team throughout the proposal, selection and now onboarding process. It is amazing to consider that all this help has been offered and provided on a strictly volunteer basis.</font></li><li style=""><font face="tahoma, sans-serif">In spite of the handbook and the willingly shared institutional knowledge, Cameron's point #7 is very important. It does <i>feel</i> like we are starting anew and that there may be some lost opportunities for a more streamlined onboarding and knowledge transfer process, potentially aided by professional help.</font></li><li style=""><font face="tahoma, sans-serif">We have also seen that there is a good deal of very important but more routine work involved with things like agreements and formalizing relationships with PCO's and again it is amazing that this process is as smooth as it is with the variety volunteers involved and the volume of email discussion. The notion of having some kind of professional help that "plays point" and tee things up for the committees seems worth considering going forward. This too was brought up in the Bob Basque initiated thread on thumb-drives in the context of supporting smaller events and marketing opportunities.</font></li><li style=""><font face="tahoma, sans-serif">With the start of the 2018 process in sight, we also believe that Cameron's point #8 on the "relationship with Location Tech" is very important. Although we were successful in the bid process, we did find the process somewhat bruising and we honestly did not expect or anticipate this competition to be so much about the Location Tech relationship. Indeed, all three cities put in extremely strong proposals that we believe would have delivered successful conferences. From my personal vantage point there should be a workable long term, positive and supportive relationship between these two foundations. Indeed, there are many more interests that are shared between to the two organizations than might be disagreements. The BLOC wants to work with LT for the strongest possible North American event in 2016 and we look forward to their support for a strong Global event, on North American soil, in 2017. It would appear there is a very strong basis for collaboration and partnership.</font></li></ol><div><font face="tahoma, sans-serif">We believe these Conference Dev discussions are of the utmost importance. Indeed, we all feel that FOSS4G continues to be on the rise with ever increasing interest. We hope that more and more successful conferences - including Bonn and Boston - will help create further financial stability for OSGeo and that this stability may be able to lead to things like professional staff to support the vibrant volunteer committee and Board ecosystem.</font></div><div><font face="tahoma, sans-serif"><br></font></div><div><font face="tahoma, sans-serif">Regardless, we will watch these discussions carefully and we stand at the ready to share our experiences and viewpoint if helpful. And, thanks again for your assistance in getting our agreements produced and signed last week.</font></div><div><font face="tahoma, sans-serif"><br></font></div><div><font face="tahoma, sans-serif">Sincerely, MT</font></div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><div class="gmail_quote">On Mon, Mar 14, 2016 at 3:03 PM, Steven Feldman <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:shfeldman@gmail.com" target="_blank">shfeldman@gmail.com</a>></span> wrote:<br><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex"><div style="word-wrap:break-word">I have pulled together an initial list of priorities or topics for discussion at <a href="https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Conference_Committee_2016_Priorities" target="_blank">https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Conference_Committee_2016_Priorities</a> it is based on the emails in this thread. Feel free to add to the list or to reorder (the order is currently just the sequence in which topics were posted i.e. no prioritisation)<div><br></div><div>Once we have the agreement between the board and the Boston LOC completed I will kick off discussion asking members which topic they wish to take first.</div><div><br></div><div>Cheers<br><div>

    events, with each new event starting with a new team. Ideas have
    floated in the past about having a single person dedicated to FOSS4G
    events. This might be a paid position<br>
    8. Considering our relationship between OSGeo and LocationTech, both
    of which host Open Source Geospatial events, both of which bring
    unique but slightly different value propositions. 3 cities bid for
    FOSS4G from North America for 2017, two teamed with LocationTech.
    Debate about which city to select was dominated by whether OSGeo
    should work with LocationTech, which resulted in these cities
    potentially being disadvantaged. This is something the conference
    committee should resolve before calling for bids.<br>
    9. Understanding and formalising our position related to FOSS4G
    regional and local events and working out how we can support and
    help them better<br>

            idea to review the RfP documentation and requirements before
            issuing again as there have been several suggestions for
            improvements.</li>
