Some time ago to get some funds the freenode team "sold" t-shirts with
some IRC magic that is applied to your irc nick. I got my t-shirt
(several months later) and my nick magic and I'm also happy to
contribute with the project that sustain a basic communication channel.

In the same way, maybe it could be interesting to accept money from
individuals offering (apart from the gratitude) some kind of artifacts
like a discount for the OSGeo Store, an OSGeo Live USB, an email alias, etc.

Other projects do that kind of things like FSF[1].

My 2cts (Arnulf please don't stop for just that 2cts :P)
