Thank you Ayo for these updates from Lagos. Great work you all are doing.

Your article on Open Source and Economic development is of wider interest to colleagues globally https://digitalspatial.com/blog/opensource-and-economic-development/

Open source has given a big boost for lot of startups in countries like India and created lot of highly skilled employment opportunities for the youth. Our OSGeo India colleagues are doing great work for getting this to next generation (high school students) . Ravi Kumar and colleagues have done a recent workshop for students might be of interest. One article from one of the newspapers on how this is creating lot of high skilled employment for local youth[1] is really important . India has also good expertise in developing low cost space technologies [2] ,and this a is good way to accelerate open innovation ecosystem and opportunities for the startups around geospatial.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Ayo,

Thank you for sharing the updates and great to see the community build up . Great to see the community links of OSM and OSGeo expanding rapidly both locally and globally. OSM is now truly the Global Mapping Agency and OSGeo is the world's largest geospatial ecosystem. What a great combination of synergies. Both just over a decade old and have fundamentally changed the whole geolandscape. And this is just the start :-)

Peter, Vyron and me are working on a paper on this and this is good example to highlight. I am sharing this with wider OSGeo community so we keep expanding synergies.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Subject: [GeoForAll-Africa] Lagos Mapping Party 2017

Hello,

Thanks for all that attended our Lagos Mapping party !!! We are finally a community !!!

Our Lagos mapping party was attended by 14 people.
People from University of Lagos, Lagos State Government (Science and technology Ministry), codefordevelopment.org<http://codefordevelopment.org><http://codefordevelopment.org>, utility companies and IT startups.

One of our sponsors and partners (http://www.moriwo.com ) had sent a streetview camera to capture Epe and we plan to use the panorama data to update openstreetmap.

MoRiWo data had identified the OSM data had streets that no longer existed and also captured new streets.
>From the streetview data, we also could identify street names.

The edits are being processed in JOSM so will be uploaded sometime during the week.

At the mapping party, some of the participants had actually been contributing to OSM but had stopped due to non availability of a local support community to ask questions and also seek assistance.

The theme of the party changed to a community building discussion whereby issues were deliberated and solutions provided.

We established the foundations of a Lagos community (not just OSM, but for all Osgeo platforms/products).

The attendance is expected to grow at the next meeting in March (which we all agreed will hold monthly).

I am working on the photos and videos of the event and will be uploading these to a blog during this week and will also share the links.

Our Abuja mapping party may be impacted by the airport that is scheduled to be shut down this week for repairs. We are still trying to confirm.

The Ibadan mapping party scheduled for the 11th March will still go ahead, since the energy and feedback from Lagos was very vibrant.

Thanks once more for all those that could make it.

Regards
