I am also very happy to see that the University of Melbourne , the home to Australia’s first Open Source Geospatial Laboratory in Australia will host the FOSS4G SOTM Oceania 2018 next week (November 20-23, 2018). For the first time, the FOSS4G and OpenStreetMap communities of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands are gathering for 4 incredible days of exploring open source geospatial tech & open data.

Details at https://foss4g-oceania.org<https://foss4g-oceania.org/>

Greetings to everyone at FOSS4G SOTM Oceania 2018.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Subject: Call for establishing dedicated Research Centres for Open Geospatial Science globally

Dear colleagues,

Just 5 years ago this time (November 2013), I was invited to join the European Union scientific delegation to Australia for meetings and workshop at the Australian Academy of Sciences [1] in Canberra.

One of the key official outcomes of the EU-Australia meeting was the establishment an Open Source Geoscience Sustainable Cities Laboratory at the University of Melbourne with linked laboratories across Australia and New Zealand, under the Open Source Geospatial Foundation-International Cartographic Association (ICA-OSGeo) Initiative (jointly by INSPIRE, AURIN, OSGeo Foundation). Details at

https://docs.education.gov.au/system/files/doc/other/third_european_australian_workshop_on_research_infrastructure_communique_final_16_dec.pdf

I want to thank esp. Chris Pettit for his vision and efforts for establishing the first Open Source Geospatial Lab in Australia at the University of Melbourne [2]. My thanks to all colleagues Stephan Winter, Suzanne Mavoa ,Ian D Rutherfurd, Xavier Goldie,Mohsen Kalantari, Richard Sinnott at the University of Melbourne for their dedication and efforts for Open Principles in GeoScience and Education.

I am requesting all colleagues who are part of key international scientific delegations from the European Union or National governments to support Open principles in Science and Education and use the opportunity to work for establishing dedicated Research Centres for Open Geospatial Science globally, so we can keep expanding the discipline and ensure digital economy opportunities for all.

Best wishes,

Suchith
