Hi Nick,
For simple try-outs - combination of Quantum GIS and MapServer:
Under Windows http://www.geostudio.pl/FOSS/OGC_WMS&WFS_MS4W2.doc
or under linux: http://www.geostudio.pl/FOSS/OGC_WMS&WFS_LiveDVD.doc

You can also choose GeoServer, which has more friendly administration interface.

Naturally for the production level you need a secure solution... So the configuraiton of Apache and MapServer must be finetuned to be safe. How? You can easily find in the Apache and MapServer documentation.

Success!

Best regards:
Subject: [OSGeo-Discuss] Options for setting up a Web Feature Service

Hello osgeo people,

I am a member of a professional institution that is considering setting up a web feature service that publishes point locations, of members and offices, in a global context.

The idea being to, instead of producing a map directly, to instead just publish the WFS, which makes the information available for mash-ups.

The published data is likely to have a very small volume and only be updated a few times per annum.

How do you go about setting up a WFS?

Regards,
nick
