The money that OSGeo gets from Google is this year<br>
500USD per student. Before i was admin and also before<br>
i acted as a mentor, this matter was discussed among<br>
the mentors at the time, whether to distribute the<br>
money among the mentors or to destinate them to<br>
another use, being this decision up to the<br>
organizations participating in gsoc. As far as i can<br>
tell, the problem of distributing the money to the<br>
mentors was to make a lot of small payments of which a<br>
considerable part would be eaten by bank transfers and<br>
currency changes. So it was agreed that the whole sum<br>
should be used to support code sprints instead.<br>
Now, if you guys think this should be discussed over<br>
again, you're welcome, but this would apply to next<br>
year's budget, and should be agreed upon by all mentors.<br>
My personal opinion: I think it more useful to use the<br>
budget for a common purpose rather than distributing<br>
it in small amounts, for example if you don't like it<br>
destinated to code sprints, would be to use it for<br>
financial support for students to attend conferences.<br>
For example at fosdem we have been organizing the<br>
geospatial session and i have every year invited our<br>
gsoc students to present their works but they couldn't<br>
afford the travel and accommodation.<br>
Google also gives 500USD for supporting students<br>
travel to conferences, you mentors will be asked to<br>
propose a name of a deserving gsoc student and an<br>
event that he or she would like to attend and in case<br>
of multiple names we will either split the aid or<br>
choose among the students. Last year if I remember<br>
correctly this call was made directly to mentors by<br>
google to provide names to them of deserving students,<br>
but i'm not aware if anyone of osgeo made the request<br>
or got funded.<br>
Back to your specific request, Vicky, I suggest you<br>
address this to the osgeo marketing committee , that<br>
is administering osgeo's budget, and they should be<br>
able to give you an answer.<br>

As far as I know, nobody ever used the mentor money.<br>
They were always, silently (I hear some rumors on<br>
this), retained by OSGeo as organization.<br>

As long term istSOS mentor, i would also be<br>
interested in using these money to support<br>
