Hello Victor,<br>
Well done on the Free GIS Book.<br>
<br>
Regarding translation: We have been translating multiple pages, into
multiple languages for the OSGeo-Live project, and I'd be happy to
help coordinate translation of the Free GIS Book in a similar
manner.<br>
<br>
You can see our coordination process described here:<br>
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Translate">http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Translate</a><br>
<br>
I would suggest breaking up the Free GIS Book into lots of small
sections that are short enough for a volunteer to easily translate
by themselves, and then track using a similar spreadsheet to the one
we use for the OSGeo-Live projects:<br>

Hi all,
<br>
<br>
I am proud to announce that, after a long work, the first version
of
<br>
the Free GIS Book is ready to be released. It is a 900+ pages book
<br>
which covers most of the main topics regarding GIS, from analysis
to
<br>
visualization, from the history of GIS to the fundamentals of Web
<br>
Mapping or SDIs. A first version is currently available from the
book
<br>
website, but, since we are still in the process of correcting and
<br>
proof-reading the book, it includes linenumbers to make it easier
to
<br>
locate errors and typos. However, it is complete and can be
downloaded
<br>
to get an idea of what the book will look like once it is
finished.
<br>
<br>
A book work session (similar to a code sprint, but with text
instead
<br>
of code...) is scheduled at the Jornadas de SIG Libre de Girona
(the
<br>
spanish equivalent of FOSS4G), and after that the final version is
<br>
expected to be ready. It might not be inmediatly after, but
definitely
<br>
it will not be long after the conference that the book will be
<br>
officially released.
<br>
<br>
As some of you already know, the book is written in spanish, but
we
<br>
would love to have an english version, and this is the main reason
why
<br>
I am sending this email to the list. Next FOSS4G, which will take
<br>
place in Denver, is a great oportunity to start working seriously
on
<br>
that. There will already be a full text to translate and the
<br>
conference will take place in a english-speaking country, which
means
<br>
that many people who can contribute to that english version will
be
<br>
there.
<br>
<br>
I think we should start thinking about how to plan this, in case
we
<br>
want to take the great opportunity that FOSS4G brings us regarding
the
<br>
free GIS book. I do not have an idea about how to do it, but
<br>
suggestions are welcome and it would be great to discuss it. We
still
<br>
have plenty of time to talk about it.
<br>
<br>
Regards
<br>
<br>
Victor Olaya
