That would be great!

A complementary idea: maybe we could add a package gdal-jpp-compat (or
something like that) in elgis-plus (which will probably have a
dependency on JPP).

This package would just provide additional dependencies such as
maven2, and maybe a few of the image-io hacks, etc., in order to
smooth the integration with all these tricky bits.

We could then keep gdal-java with the core JNI libraries in a
non-updating-base repo (elgis or epel).

As an example: internally, we produce mostly java apps but we don't
deploy them with a JPP approach, using OSGi instead. So I have quite a
few applications where we would mostly need to have the OS specific
bit (the JNI libraries) properly built and installed. We would then
ship the OS-independent java part as a repackaged OSGi bundle.

(more generally, we of course need a consistent JPP approach in order
to be able to package and deploy in a standard way geoserver, etc.)
