Did you try starting from GDAL 1.8.0 in ELGIS testing?
This is our "best" version in terms of patches etc.
And the one we will use when starting working on EL6.

Yes, I actually started with 1.8.0. When I hit the compile errors, I
decided to back-pedal and try the source rpm that presumably was
used for the EPEL gdal package. But even that failed, so I'm at a
loss...<br>
I'll try to clean everything out and start from scratch again.<br>
