Honestly, the closest solution to my heart is Jason's proposal :-)
but your solution would work for me very well.
So then it's possible to do

svn co https://svn.osgeo.org/fdo/trunk/Source fdo
cd fdo
svn status
svn update

without dealing with huge number of files in www directory.
