Without knowing much about the SDE API, the ArcSDE provider is a bit outdated
in the provider capabilities department. It doesn't even do name-only schema
and feature class listings (introduced nearly 2 yrs ago), which would have
enormous performance improvements for ArcSDE data stores with 100s of
feature classes.

wrt the direct connect provider, you're best to speak to either Haris or
Crispin as they are the ones spear-heading this work.
