<div dir="auto">I know Vasiti from when I worked in Fiji.<div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">I'll invite her to join the committee.</div></div><br><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr">On Fri, 27 Jul. 2018, 09:20 John Bryant, <<a href="mailto:johnwbryant@gmail.com">johnwbryant@gmail.com</a>> wrote:<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex"><div dir="ltr">Hi all, FYI:<div><br></div><div>Last night I gave a very short (2 or 3 min) presentation at Melbourne GeoRabble about FOSS4G SotM Oceania. I've saved the slides <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1YHJRYxEzkeFex2iztFOcBIWcbPcKNd2iXgBYKyabsSM" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">here</a>, feel free to re-use, re-purpose, share as you see fit.</div><div><br></div><div>It went very well, and seemed to generate a fair bit of buzz. I gave away a bunch of stickers, and had some interesting conversations with keen people afterwards. There were ~100 people there (biggest GeoRabble I've ever seen!), and it felt like a very effective way to get the word out.</div><div><br></div><div>So, some important outcomes to share:</div><div><ul><li>I met a woman named Vasiti Soko, from Fiji, who is currently living, working, & studying in Melbourne. We've had a few email exchanges in the past regarding the conference, but I hadn't realised she is currently based here. In any case, she's enthusiastic about this event, and would be pleased to contribute somehow. <b>I recommend we invite her to join our committee, if she's willing - I believe she would have a lot to contribute.</b></li><li>Student pricing: I was asked twice why we don't have student pricing - as you'll recall, we recently decided to introduce a student discount, but we haven't publicised this yet. I will update the website today, and I think we should put out some info about this change ASAP. <b>Does anyone want to help with that, today? I will put something out this weekend, one way or the other. Martin, Sarah - are there academic track considerations here, or do we just put the word out and let it happen?</b></li><li>DELWP: I met a number of people in the Vic state gov department of <a href="https://www2.delwp.vic.gov.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">DELWP</a>, who are very enthusiastic about open source spatial, and some of whom had never heard of this event. I've been trying to get through to DELWP, but haven't been able to make it past my original contact. I will follow through on these new contacts today, and try to secure a meeting at their offices. DELWP is probably one of the biggest employers of spatial people in Melbourne, and represents a big opportunity to spread the word within a major influencing body.</li></ul><div>Also, Phillip Mallis gave a presentation on Maptime Melbourne's work doing humanitarian OSM mapping, which was well received and will hopefully add to the buzz around MM's events as well as ours.</div></div><div><br></div><div>All in all, it felt like a great way to let people know about our event... I would encourage any of you who have a GeoRabble coming up in your hometown to try and get the chance to spread the word!</div><div><br></div><div>Cheers</div><div>John</div></div>
