The ribbon was first designed in 2004[1] and has been in use every  
year since for the FOSS4G conferences.  Logos and documents from  
previous conferences are archived[2] if you ever need them.
In terms of what the ribbon means - Fred Warnock from DM Solutions  
Group was the original designer, and I asked him once and he said he  
wanted to portray a flowing sense, like the interaction between users  
and developers in the community (that's what I remember him saying at  
least).

My vote is for 3b: clean, and with the "Sydney 2009" text I definitely  
know it is the shape of the opera house.
