<B><FONT COLOR="#ff0000">ICT Workers Maintain Strong Levels of Full Time Employment</FONT></B>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">ACS creates taskforce to examine age discrimination in the ICT sector</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">ACS has released the results of its annual Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Employment Survey for 2009. The Report indicates that 24.7% of respondents have experienced some form of unemployment at some stage in the last five years – down from 29% of respondents in 2007. This improvement indicates that the global financial slowdown has had little impact to date on the proportion of ICT professionals who are employed full-time</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">The ACS members survey reveals that based on workload and employment characteristics, ICT employment for full time workers remains strong.</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">Of those employed, 65% are working more than a 40 hour week - the same percentage as in 2007. However, there is a marginal improvement in work life balance, with less employees working over 50 hours a week.</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">In comparison to the 2007 boom period, there has been a minor reduction in full-time and only a slight increase in part-time work reported in 2009, suggesting that employment levels have remained steady.</FONT>

<B><FONT COLOR="#ff0000">Lending a Hand with Bringing the Next Generation of ICT Practitioners into the Profession</FONT></B>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">The ACS Education Professional Year program has been running since early May 2008 and is currently looking for expressions of interest for tutors in the online learning experience for Professionalism in ICT. <FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">The program is delivered in partnership with the ACS Education Professional Year Partners which includes Professional Pathways Australia (PPA), Swinburne University and Navitas in Melbourne, Navitas, Education Centre of Australia and PPA in Sydney. <FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">The Professional Year Partners deliver two components face to face (Business Communications Skills and Australian Workplace Culture) and then arrange work experience placements with host companies. These two components are around 13 weeks each and are part time. The work placement is called an 'internship' and is unpaid and full time for 12 weeks.</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">The component ACS Education directly conducts is Professionalism in ICT (PICT) and is delivered online in the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) at the same time as the internship placement. It is a 14 week program with 2 non contact weeks in which assignments are submitted. Each week the tutor loads the weekly Moodle forums with the work to be undertaken by the participants and grades the work of the participants for the previous week, providing individual feedback to each participant. In all there are between 10 and 20 participants per cohort and the workload is around 10 hours per week. All grades and feedback are deposited in the LMS each week. Because we are working with international graduates, we also take on the role of mentor to help them understand the work of ICT practitioners in Australia.</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">ACS Education offers a modest payment per student to tutors. For the most part, tutors are motivated by other than money, for example wanting to return something to the profession or an interest in helping those entering the profession to also return something one day. Tutors often learn something along the way as the learning materials are all provided.</FONT>

Many of the problems associated with development and maintenance projects are attributable to business requirement issues – definition, specification, communication and modification.</FONT>

Athol is a Microsoft Certified Professional trainer for Microsoft Project for Windows, a Chartered Secretary and a member of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Accountants. He delivers regular public and Inhouse courses for the Australian Computer Society.</FONT>

But to what extent are the emerging capabilities proving themselves for large corporates and Government? Do they have such different requirements that the benefits translate differently for them? Indeed what are the steps that corporates and Government can take to maximise the advantages of cloud computing in lowering costs and improving collaborative working?</FONT>
<B><FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">Presenter: </FONT></B><FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e"> Paul Cooper, Industry Director, Public Sector and Cloud Computing Solutions SMS Management & Technology</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">Paul Cooper has an IT career of 25 years and over that period has lead or participated in a number of technology innovations for corporate and blue chip clients with the end user experience at the centre of his focus. Some highlights include leading the technical architecture effort for the first standard operating environment deployed within a major corporate in Australia. This deployment resulted in a standardised desktop, mail, applications suite and back-end mainframe environment being successfully implemented. Paul also developed an innovative Business Technology Plan for a major Victorian Government Department which resulted in a major standardised delivery environment being established.</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">More recently, Paul lead the establishment of the Emerging Business stream within his firm with a particular emphasis on the potential of cloud computing and social computing to improve work practices and reduce costs. Paul has a Ph.D in Biochemistry (Melb University) and a Grad Dip in Business (Org Change) from RMIT University. Paul has held a number of senior consulting and management positions with SMS and currently holds the position of Emerging Business Director and Health & Public Sector lead with SMS Management & Technology Ltd.</FONT>

<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">Our October Breakfast, will briefly outline the results and recommendations of the survey, but rather than have a special guest speaker, we are doing something a little different at this event.</FONT>

<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">The ACS provides its members with an email redirection service as an included member benefit. This service allows a member to maintain a constant</FONT> youralias@acsmail.net.au <FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">address or </FONT>youralias@acslink.net.au <FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">while managing online on a 24/7 basis the addresses to which incoming emails are redirected.</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">If you are moving around on a regular basis then this service should be invaluable.</FONT>
<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e">The Email Redirection Service operates using the concept of an email address (alias) in the format </FONT>"youralias@acsmail.net.au"<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e"> - with incoming emails to this address being redirected to one or two standard email addresses. These redirection addresses and in fact the allocation of the alias can be managed online by the member via My Email Redirection section in the Members Only Site. Once you have an alias allocated then any email directed to </FONT>"youralias@acsmail.net.au"<FONT COLOR="#5e5e5e"> will be redirected to the addresses you have specified. Online updating is also fully operational for members with the earlier @acslink.net.au domain.</FONT>
