I wish I had saved my comments from the voting form but here is the re-hash:
Logo 1:

I
think this one has a good composition and is nicely laid out. I'm not a
fan of the font at all. Maybe a more narrow one would tie better to the
lines of the contours. And could even use actual contours from one of
the volcanoes. Just because it's a log doesn't mean it has to be brown!
Logos can break the rules! I say make it bright. It speaks well to Portland and could improve
on the geospatial side of things... but I like it.

Logo 2

Although
I find logo 2 way less creative and I am not a fan out it's layout, in
particular the text layout, font and ribbon placement, I do think that a
map could potentially be able to bridge the representation of how
awesome Portland is with the artistic and innovative world of geospatial
technology.

To vamp it up...if it's an option...i would suggest
playing with line styles and colours using dots, lines, dashes etc. (as
in route maps but keeping the colours to a minimum) and if the text
wiill be over-layed on the 'map' as it currently is, to keep the map
more subtle (currently the lines are pretty heavy feeling) and let the
name/text be more the focus. I would have liked to see a better map/grid
design in the end.

Logo3

Definitely too many colours used.
It's nice but I find it pretty touristy feeling and not at all speaking
to the geospatial tech conference side of things. Though past logos have done the same (Victoria's legislature building...)

Someone
mentioned too many colours as an issue and that is definitely a
concern. Keeping them to a minimum would be best for sure.

And someone else mentioned possible issues with having
too many letters and numbers mixed and the use of PDX or Portland. I
think FOSS4G 2014 PDX could have a lot of artistic opportunity and not
end up visually confusing depending on the layout (Logo 1 worked well i
thought)
but will try to call in to the next meeting. Not sure what I can offer
as i'm in Victoria but super excited for this to happen and hopefully
can be more present/involved closer to the event!

On Fri, Dec 13, 2013 at 12:00 PM, <foss4g2014-request@lists.osgeo.org> wrote:
Here are my thoughts on the logos

1 (Stumptown):
I like the 'organic-ness'. Not sure that I like the green. Might want
to go some bright color to accent off the nature colors. Or maybe a
darker green like a dark green forest.

I have questions about the flexibility of this logo, i.e. will it work
on many colors and backgrounds?

2 (Path/Grid):
I like this a lot too but street focused and perhaps too rectilinear.
Perhaps further 'river' development could improve this. Perhaps no
outline on the river where it flows out of the rectilinear area,
leaving it free flowing and bounding. Perhaps a larger more complete
river (connecting with Columbia and upriver Columbia) with the ribbon
just a portion of the river network in a slightly different blue or
outlined... Perhaps flip the ribbon so that there can be more down
river flowing? This could be less street centric by removing the
streets and just using bike paths/routes, not sure that would be
recognizable.

This could be an awesome OSM logo as is...

3 (Bridgetown):
I like this a lot too. Not sure on the red.

I second Elizabeth and Percy's number of colors/total printed area
concerns. If Elizabeth thinks it is not feasible for use, we should
ask that it be redesigned or eliminated. If we outline the sign, then
we could remove one of those large colors by making the shirt that
color. We don't want a great but infeasible logo.

Really the problem is that I like all of these. Initially 2
(Path/Grid) popped out at me most.
FWIW, I think this could be one of those that the monitor makes a big difference. The color on my iPad is noticeably lighter than the color on my screen. (my screen is calibrated, although I haven't re-calibrated in a while).

I'm not a fan of the ribbon placement myself, but that's certainly the sort of thing that can be tweaked...

I was also thinking that it might be cool to have the topo actually be the topo of Mt Hood. Not sure how feasible that is, though.
I think it's possible to have a more colorful print/digital version and a simpler version for screen printing..

Even though the Forest Service motif was my idea, I do kind of worry that for the logo itself it's a bit derivative.

I still like the idea of using FS themed signage at the conference itself, though?
