Eli brings up a good point. Are we already locked in to the OCC catering at this point (i.e. what's the contract say)? Whatever alternative options we come up with, would we still be stuck with a buyout to some degree or another?

I would bet there would be a sharp divide in folks paying for themselves and folks who would be coming on business travel expense from their organization. For folks who are coming on fixed-no-receipt per diems it isn't that uncommon to count on breakfast/lunch (and even dinner with receptions and the like) and pocket the per diem (or use for evening booze). Having everything on site also helps lubricate the "hallway track", not to mention the time that folks spend in and around the vendor exhibits (for FOSS4GNA, our exhibitors commented that they really appreciated having the snacks served in the exhibitor area to draw folks to their displays).

What if we cut the break food/drink service and tell people up front to byos (bring your own snacks). I think people would be receptive to the idea if it cut $200 off their registration fees. As someone previously mentioned perhaps a survey is in order. We certainly wouldn't want to offend or alienate any attendees. Just my two cents...
