Jack,

I just downloaded and installed netcdf 3.5.1 on my Debian system
from source and nc_inq_var is defined in netcdf.h.  Is it possible to
are picking up some antique netcdf headers or something? 

My GDAL build against the netcdf 3.5.1 library went without a hitch.
