Yes, this is definitely a problem of the HFA driver just because NoData
does not supported for that datasets. But you should provide more
information here: gdalinfo on input and output datasets and results of
gdal_translate command. Does gdal_translate produce wrong files too?

HFA driver supports as much colors as it was used in the file. What do
you exactly mean when saying about broken color tables? (gdalinfo
results on input/output files helps here).

I see that this issue was further discussed in the GRASS list. Am I
right that it is a r.out.gdal problem and fix is already found?
