[Gdal-dev] Java library for reading ESRI shapefiles?

www.openmap.org has some shape file classes, although, if you get the
shape file white paper off of esri's website it's fairly straightforward
to parse the files directly.  You can see how they do it in openmap.

Does anyone know of a freely available Java library for reading ESRI 
shapefiles?  The gdal ogr and shapelib code has been great in the past, 
but now I have a need to read ESRI shapefiles directly from a Java
applet.
