GRASS cannot seem to import a .ecw using r.in.gdal

I have installed gdal separately and following the instructions in
README.1st I have entered the code:

carla at ubuntu:~/Desktop/fwtools/FWTools-1.0.0b2/bin_safe$
./gdal_translate ~/MapsofDaintree/se5501.ecw ~/MapsofDaintree/se5501.gdal

only to get the following error messages:

Input file size is 7106, 3990
0...10...20...30.ERROR 1: TryWinRasterIO() failed for blocked scanline 0
of band 2.
ERROR 1: IReadBlock failed at X offset 0, Y offset 0
ERROR 1: GetBlockRef failed at X block offset 0, Y block offset 0

Unfortunately, I have no idea what this error message is trying to tell me.

Importing via GRASS (6.0.1) by: file > Import > Raster map > Multiple
formats using GDAL

Raster file to be imported
"file name.ecw"
Name of resultant raster map
"new file name"

and clicking Run gives:

r.in.gdal input = file name.ecw output = new file name
ERROR 4: file name.ecw not recognised as a supported file format.

Can someone help? All I want is for se5501.ecw to be recognised by GRASS

I would be very greatful for any help
