[Gdal-dev] gdal-grass-1.3.1.1 can't find grass libs ...

ok- this has been asked about 100 times now, but on a certain machine the 
configure script for the gdal-grass plugin cannot find the libraries that 
grass installs....

here is what i have done so far

updated /etc/ld.so.conf   to include /usr/local/grass-6.1-cvs/lib/
sudo ldconfig

made symbolic links to grass libs into /usr/local/lib
sudo ldconfig

but somehow the configure script refuses to find -lgrass_gis

this is a Kubuntu machine

i have been able to compile the gdal-grass plugin  ok on other debian machines 
and ubuntu machines...

any thoughts?
