[Gdal-dev] gdal-1.3.1 installation: gdal-config, gdal_translate, gdalinfo all show different versions

Dear GDAL Users,
I installed gdal-1.3.1 on mandriva 2006,
now i get the following

gdal-config --version
1.3.1
which  gdal-config
/usr/local/bin/gdal-config

gdal_translate --version
GDAL 1.2.6.0, released 2005/03/13
which gdal_translate
/usr/local/bin/gdal_translate

gdalinfo --version
GDAL 1.2.6.0, released 2005/03/13
which gdalinfo
/usr/local/bin/gdalinfo

Looking above one can notice that there may be more than one version of gdal
installed on the system , which i think is not the case because after 
slocate
i dont find any gdal 1.2.6 on my system

If i want to remove all existing installations (if any) of the gdal library,
what are the steps i need to follow. So that i can install the new version
fresh.
