I've seen this problem recently with an SuSE-10 installed gcc-4.xx
pre-release compiler and it went away by getting rid of some of the
compiler flags in CFLAGS, or by updating the compiler to a later
version.  I doubt that's your problem, but I figured I should
mention it.  The compiler identified itself with gcc-4.02
pre-release or something similar.
