I've hardcoded the path to gdal_i.lib in the swig/python/setup.py file
in order to try the swig interface.

It then builds correctly but the gdalnumeric.cpp file is not compiled. 

How does the swig module have to be installed ? Without gdalnumeric, it
cannot work. I suppose that the old version is not the right one. Is
there something missing. I've tried it under linux, it seems to be the
same. 

Any guidance is welcome ;-)
