[Gdal-dev] Complex data types

Hi!
I want to extract data from ENVISAT ASAR files (Envisat/ESAT format). I would like to use the Python bindings for this task, and read a ROI, rather than the whole image, which is quite large. I understand that GDAL will output CInt16 data types, which I will then need to process to work out the magnitude and so on. However, I can't figure out how to read these data into Python (Numpy) arrays.

Also, is there a way to be able to specify a ROI in the original image? There are some GCPs in the file's header, but the UL and LR coordinates are purely row and column numbers. Any ideas how this subsetting can be achieved?

Of course, any other experiences of using ASAR SLC or PRI images with GDAL will be most welcomed! :)
