Sundaram,

GDAL supports projected and geographic datasets.  A geotransform is
potentially available in either case.  It may be that the geographic
dataset you did not get a geotransform for instead was georefenced
with ground control points.  A gdalinfo report on the dataset would
explain determine if that is the case.
