Just to clarify things a bit, I'm using Sun Studio 11 (C and C++ version 5.8 compilers). I obviously compiled Xerces 2.7.0 and it went like a charm ; although it's installed in a non standard place, it works well (GDAL's configure script compiles a minimal C++ program with success).
