Thanks, it does seem to work.

I would like to clarify the ByteOrder clauses. The first time
the file is read the byteorder is HIGHLOW, the next time it
is LOWHIGH.

(in the code you sent me, the second byteorder statement is
commented out, but I've tested it explictly both ways).

Now, I always thought that a file had to be of one byteorder
all the way through. Am I wrong? Is it possible for byteorder
to change within a file?
