I dont understand how KML reading can not be in 1.4.3.. that was 
entirely working already..

Reading KML itself is not the issue.. In the same time as this KML 
driver has been going, another
project 'arc2earth', .Net/ESRI based, has created a huge feature list. 
This project seems
stuck at the starting line with KML. Maybe I could have written more 
code, maybe not, either
way I am feeling no joy right now.
