Thanks for he heads up -- I've gone and joined that list...

.using them with SIP (whatever it is).

SIP is a SWIG-like system for generating python bindings to C++ code. It 
was developed for and is used by PyQT, and thus for QGIS.

A agree -- better to add features to the GDAL SWIG bindings than have a 
whole other set!
