The new SRTM driver in GDAL reads the 1 and 3 sec SRTM, but not the
30sec format, I believe.  But not a problem -- I didn't notice before
that there is another directory at the SRTM30+ site with ERMapper
headers, which combined with the raw data files works just fine with
GDAL.   So it will be easy to make the tiles and assemble with
gdal_merge.py.
