R: [gdal-dev] GDAL & Python

I'm building GDAL right now --with-python option enabled; I thought the same as you suggested... but now I'm trying build GDAL without python installed, because the last option enables python bindings, and, I think, this feature would not require python installed; furthermore, configure tells that the old python support is deprecated and suggests (as I understood) to enable python bindings instead.

Marco,

I believe that the key is to have your installed python in the path, and then
the python setup.py script for GDAL queries it to find appropriate information.

I can't promise that msys/mingw builds with python support will be easy
though.  I'm under the impression it might be tricky though I haven't done
it myself.
